"It's all about groove, energy and feeling." That’s the philosophy of DJ and producer Troy Carter who looks set to make a big impact on the electronic dance scene in 2013. Originally from Canada where he perfected his skills, Troy is poised to bring his flair and passion for music to a global audience. Born and raised in Montreal, music has been at the heart of Troy's life since an early age. By the time he reached his teens he was heavily into hip hop before being introduced to the early sounds of house by his older brother. It wasn’t long before Troy saw his first DJ in action and became hooked. He was soon playing around Montreal, including a Sunday night residency at the Tokyo Bar. As word spread that Troy's signature sound of slamming but still funky, bumping tech house was causing serious damage in the clubs, he began to play all over Canada.
Troy played alongside big names like Moby and Bad Boy Bill, and a particular highlight came in 2008 when he performed a live show – Troy is also an accomplished vocalist - in front of 70,000 people at Le Chemin qui Marche, the 400th anniversary of the province of Quebec. In 2010 his DJ travels also took him to Nikki Beach in Miami, and the Dominican Republic where he played at Festival Presidente de Música Latina in Juan Dolio.
Since the age of 16, Troy has been working in the studio and perfecting his production skills. In 2008 he released his first two singles, 'No Request', in collaboration with Marco G on DJ Dan's InStereo Recordings imprint, and 'Party On' with Marco G & DJ Kal on Opaque Music. Troy also collaborated with Frank Turgeon on a remix of 'Analemma (I Will Follow You)' by DJ Yovan & Claire Hayek for New York's KULT Records. 2011 saw his production debut release 'Changing' on 'Mixed Signals Music' with remixes by Frank Turgeon & Richard Earnshaw, the latter reaching #7 on Traxsource's overall Top 10 downloads. He has several new tracks ready to drop.
Whether as a DJ or producer, Troy always brings those three key elements to his music: groove, energy and feeling.
"First and foremost, a track needs to have a good groove," he explains. "I want people to move to my music when I play. Second is the energy it gives off – it has to be so strong, almost forcing people to get up and dance. Last but not least, it has to have some kind of feeling to it, whether it uplifts your spirits, or makes you feel like there's a cause for celebration."
The future looks very bright for Troy Carter as he prepares to bring his music to an international audience of clubbers and house music aficionados. This is just the beginning for a DJ and producer who lives and breathes house music every day.
